  9.    • A Macintosh with a 68020, 68030, or 68040 processor or a Power Macintosh

  21. Open Transport

  23. TotalAccess 1.2 supports Open Transport, the new networking standard used by Apple Computer, Inc. If you have a Power Macintosh 7200, 7500, 8500, or 9500 system, Open Transport should have been pre-installed for you.

  25. Open Transport versions before 1.1 are unstable and cannot be used with TotalAccess (particularly Netscape 2.0). To check your version number, open the TCP/IP Control Panel and click the Info button. If the Open Transport version number is 1.0x, you must upgrade to version 1.1 or better.

  33. MacTCP

  35. Those machines which do not support Open Transport require MacTCP, which is installed by TotalAccess.
  36.  
  37. TotalAccess will perform auto-configuration of MacTCP. It will first backup your current configuration to a file called "MacTCP Prep Backup". It will then configure MacTCP for your EarthLink account.

  39. If MacTCP is currently configured for something else (such as another PPP driver or local network) you will need to restore your settings for your original software to work again.  To do this, copy the file "MacTCP Prep Backup" in your Preferences directory to "MacTCP Prep".

For your actual Internet connection, TotalAccess 1.2 uses the FreePPP driver, based off MacPPP. This is a replacement to the former TotalAccess PPP extension. The FreePPP driver supports both Open Transport Networking used on the latest Macintosh models as well as the "classic" MacTCP networking. It features many enhancements over both TotalAccess PPP and MacPPP.

  45. FreePPP is installed in your active Extension folder where it must remain for a dialup internet connection to be established. The TotalAccess installer will automatically remove TotalAccess PPP if it finds it in your active Extensions folder.

FreePPP is a replacement to MacPPP: they may not be used in conjuction. To disable MacPPP, take "PPP" out of the Extensions folder and "Config PPP" out of the Control Panel folder. Because FreePPP and MacPPP have indentical configuration files, your old PPP configuration will be unchanged. You can continue using FreePPP as if it were MacPPP.

  49. The control panel Config FreePPP is also installed, which allows you to manually configure your PPP connection. TotalAccess automatically configures FreePPP for your EarthLink account, and you will generally not need to used Config FreePPP to change those settings.

  51. Memory Requirements

  53. If, when registering or retrieving a TotalAccess account, you get an error message indicating "There is not enough memory to install the Internet Tools" you can try the following steps to increase the amount of free memory on your system.

  55.    • quit TotalAccess
  56.    • quit all other running applications
  57.    • use virtual memory (set with the Memory Control Panel)
  58.    • remove system extensions and control panels
  59.  
  60. After making changes, restart your system by selecting Restart from the Finder Special menu.

  62. These measures should free up enough memory to complete the installation/registration process.

  64. General Controls Settings
  65.  
  66. The Desktop setting "Show Desktop when in background" should be enabled (this is the default). To enable it, use the General Controls control panel.

If this setting is not enabled it may appear that Registration & Utilities "halts" during the account registration process. If you experience this, select Registration & Utilities from the Application Menu at the far right side of the Menu Bar at the top of the screen. The registration process will then proceed normally.

  70. Modem Settings

  72. TotalAccess comes with a standard modem list as seen in the Modem screen within Registration & Utilities. If your modem is not listed, or is selected but still won't initialize, you can set a custom modem initialization string by selecting Advanced...
